Retire and Spend Confidently in Retirement: The Key to Unlocking Your Next Chapter

What if the biggest transition of your life wasn’t just about money, but about purpose?

Retirement isn’t just a financial milestone—it’s a complete shift in how you live, think, and spend your time.

And yet, most people are left overwhelmed, unsure how to navigate this phase.

From the moment we start earning, we’re trained to save, invest, and accumulate wealth.

But no one teaches us how to use that wealth when the time comes. The financial services industry thrives on keeping us focused on the accumulation phase, leaving many unprepared for the transition into retirement.

Then, as you enter the runway to retirement, you’ve got to throw everything you’ve ever known about money out the door and think differently.

Here’s the problem: I hear stories almost daily from people working with financial advisers where the focus is solely on managing the money, your super, or your investments.

These types of advisers rarely help you answer the bigger questions – like how you’re actually tracking towards retirement or whether your lifestyle goals are achievable.

This is why so many people drift into retirement without clarity or confidence. They’re left overwhelmed, unsure how to navigate this critical phase of life. It exposes them to regret in retirement.

After working with hundreds, if not thousands, of people over two decades, I’ve seen one truth: successful retirements are the ones that are well-planned.

Whether you’re counting down the days or still finding purpose in work, this is for you.

How are you going to fill your days?

There’s only 168 hours in a week. How do you intend to fill your days?

Golfing for five days is not the answer, eventually you’ll get bored.

For some, this is an easy question to answer…

Hook up the caravan and spend endless days on the road exploring. The odd overseas holiday here and there. Helping out with the grandkids. Spending more time with friends and family. Keeping fit and healthy while spending more time on hobbies and interests.

While other’s will struggle to work out what they do with their time. Work was their life, their whole purpose and in a blink of an eye, it’s all gone.

You need to figure out what you are retiring too…

Lucky for us, most of the people we work with have grand plans on what they want to do with time in retirement. It’s more about making sure they can sustainably maintain their desired lifestyle without running out of money.

Retirement Clarity

Many lack the clarity they are looking for.

How much is Enough? How much money can I safely spend? Can I maintain my lifestyle? When can I stop working? Will I run out of money?

They are all questions which are being asked. Yet with all the information on the internet they are struggling to answer the most important questions prior to retirement.

Clarity is all about knowing your numbers. Knowing how much you need to not only live a comfortable lifestyle, but to tick off all those items on your bucket list.

I was only talking to a lady the other week. She’d worked in a high pressure professional role for decades, but the thought of stepping away felt overwhelming.

Her husband had retired, but she was struggling with deciding when to retire. She didn’t like her work anymore. She had enough money. Had other things she wanted to do. She wasn’t getting any younger.

So, I asked this question, “if you’re sitting here five years from now and you haven’t done some of the things you told me were important to you, would you regret them?

Her answer, yes…

Life is not a rehearsal and you only have so much time to pack in as many experiences and memories as you can.

It’s why it puzzles me why so many people leave it too late to plan…

If you’re sitting here five years from now, what would you regret not doing?

Retirement Confidence

Retirement Planning

To retire with confidence you need to know your numbers stack up. That you’ve done the work, tested your numbers and run various scenarios to ensure you’ve got all bases covered.

It still puzzles me today that some people work with certain advisers who can’t even tell them how they are tracking for retirement. They are generally investment advisers and are not what you need at this critical juncture in your life.

Retirement confidence comes from understanding your numbers. I have x and I can confidently generate x level of income and know I’m not at risk of running out of money. That’s waht you need to know.

At this stage it’s time to ignore all the sexy stuff to do with retirement planning (aka super funds and investments) and focus purely on the numbers.

One of the most important parts of our retirement framework we take clients through, after helping them create a clear vision, is to crunch the numbers.

This is where we literally lay everything out on the table in a safe space, warts and all.

But here’s the thing, once you’re able to understand what your money can do for you, the magic starts to happen. This is tranformational.

Maybe you can dream bigger, build in more overseas trips and maybe indulge a little more and live more comfortably.

Or maybe, you’re not quite there yet and you need to look at some tradeoffs.

Either way, it’s a critical stage to ensure you can gain a level of confidence you are comfortable with.

From here you can plan with more purpose and direction.

What would it take for you to have confidence you can retire comfortably?

Retirement Control

Retirement Planning

Imagine this for a moment…

You have control over when you pull the pin, whether it’s sooner or later. Or maybe you transition into what I call the “Bunnings Retirement”. Taking on work you want to, not because you have too.

One client of mine decided to work casually for a friend in an art gallery, not for the money, but because she liked paintings.

You have confidence you have your numbers all sorted…

It’s a matter of when, not if…

All your worries about retirement have gone…

That’s what good retirement planning is all about. It’s not about the super fund you use or the investments you have (while important).

It’s about providing confidence that you can transition into retirement with the confidence that you can fund a comfortable lifestyle guilt-free.

That finally, you have the freedom you’ve been seeking for some time…

What would it mean to you to know, with certainty, that your retirement lifestyle is achievable?

Wow, what a ride…

I can’t tell you how often I hear people say, “I wish I’d done this sooner.

If you want to step into retirement with confidence, knowing you can live the lifestyle you’ve always envisioned, it starts with knowing your numbers. That clarity is the foundation for peace of mind and freedom.

There’s a quote I always come back to from the book Enough by Paul Armson (a favorite I often share with clients):

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, ‘Wow! What a ride!’” —Hunter S. Thompson

When I think about what I do, it’s not just about retirement planning. It’s about helping people live their best lives—with clarity, confidence, and freedom.
