Asking $30k Questions Will Allow You To Live A Rich Lifestyle In Retirement

This week we had conversations with a long term client, new client and a prospective client.

For our long-term client, they had recently sold property as part of an estate they were receiving.

Working hard all their life and not quite in a financial position to fully retire. Their inheritance allowed them to bring forward their retirement. To start traveling and wind back the Airbnb they had started.

A new client who sold their business, now looking to make the most of the proceeds and live a great lifestyle. Pack in as much as they can while they are still fit and able too.

A prospective client who was entrepreneurial. They had a number of options but wanted clarification they hadn’t missed anything. Looking for more time freedom weighing up whether they need to work to still fund their lifestyle or not.

In all three conversations, the focus was on the lifestyle they wanted to live. Travel, time freedom, interests to pursue, hobbies to start and in some cases how to bring forward some of the experiences.

While they were fit and able too.

Now we’ll get to work and answer their $30k questions…

Do you want to live a comfortable lifestyle in retirement?

One where you have the flexibility to do what you want when you want. With the people you want to be with.

Travel to the destinations of your dreams…

Buy a caravan and complete the big lap of Australia…

Enjoy a nice restaurant meal…

Spend more time on your hobbies…

More time with the people you care about…

Give back to the community with causes you care about…

And many more while you are fit and able too…

The problem is, when people come to us, their focus is on retirement. But this is the tip of the iceberg.

If you think about that, it’s not really just about retirement…

It’s time to stop asking $3 questions and start asking $30k questions…

The Big Question…

One question that we find most people are seeking answers to is, “How Much Is Enough?”.

In other words, how much money do you need to live the life you want free from worrying about running out of money…

The freedom to do what you want when you want.

It’s where your focus should be. How do you use the financial resources you have to live the best life possible? While you are fit and able too…

If you want to live a rich life in your twilight years, what $30k questions do you need to be asking?

Spend extravagantly on the things you love…

You don’t hear that from many in the finance game do you?

Budgets are boring and who sticks to a budget anyway?

But we all love to spend…so spend money extravagantly on the things you love.

Want to go on luxury trips…plan for this and spend money on it.

Want to complete the big lap around Australia in a caravan…spend money on this.

Enjoy going out to nice restaurants and enjoy a nice bottle of wine without worrying whether you can afford it…spend money on this.

Want to enjoy a few more creature comforts at home…spend money on this.

Sure, you might have to make some tradeoffs. But with good planning you can spend without guilt on the things you love.

Before you’re too old to enjoy them.

You don’t have to wait until you’re retired to enjoy a rich life…

Margin Of Safety

When we see people on the runway to retirement, very few have a margin of safety.

In fact, most have little to no idea how much money they will need to live a comfortable retirement lifestyle in retirement.

This is a big problem…

How can you comfortably spend money in retirement with confidence without knowing how much you’ll need?

One of the biggest mistakes we see people planning their retirement make is not having a margin of safety built into their plans.

Having a buffer in your numbers, so that if things don’t go according to plan. You’re still going to be okay.

What happens if you suffer a prolonged share market downturn?

Are you still going to be able to fund your monthly income without selling investments at depressed prices?

You need to have a margin of safety built into your retirement plans.

Do you know what your margin of safety needs to be?

That’s a $30k question…

Asset Allocation

What shares do you need to buy?

What investment fund do you need?

What super fund should you be in?

These are all $3 questions…

How do I need to allocate my money between shares, property and fixed interest to deliver a safe return to fund my retirement lifestyle?

That’s a $30k question…

Many get lost in the woods, selecting shares and investment funds. The reality is it is the way you allocate your money between shares, property and fixed interest that drives your investment returns.

Do you know what safe investment return you need to generate to fund your comfortable retirement lifestyle?

What retirement roadmap are you following?

You need to have a roadmap. Something that informs and guides the decisions you make about your finances.

It needs to answer these questions:

#1 How much money do you need for the rest of your life to live a great lifestyle? Without running out of money.

#2 How much margin of safety do you need to have?

#3 How do you invest your money so you’re not taking more risks than you need to?

#4 What blindspots do you need to prepare for?

#5 Are you on track to spend money extravagantly on the things that matter most to you?

Like most journey’s in life, you’re going to encounter challenges you’re going to need to overcome. Retirement is no different…
